In September of 2022, Typhoon Merbok transitioned into a Northern Pacific Storm and entered the Bering Sea with high winds and a storm surge, flooding coastal villages.
Stebbins was inundated with seawater that flooded homes, destroyed property and village infrastructure, stripped insulation from houses, and left residents without heat going into winter. Areas of town were under water for weeks, roads were damaged, homes were displaced or destroyed, boats and vehicles were ruined, and sand and debris blocked access to homes and roads.

Tapraq Rock immediately began emergency utility repairs, restoring water and sewer services for the school and teacher housing units.
Tapraq Rock also purchased and shipped relief supplies to Stebbins for distribution to families in need. Our personnel surveyed damage, and then began cleanup efforts while planning repairs to infrastructure. Homes were surveyed for damage and material lists complied for repairs.
Tapraq Rock began repairs on a destroyed sea wall, while coordinating with government entities on other infrastructure repairs. Tapraq personnel assisted with applications for relief for individuals affected by the storm.
As emergency supplies began to be flown into Stebbins and St. Micheal, Tapraq Rock crews unloaded planes, transported, and stored emergency supplies.

As further funding is secured, Tapraq Rock will be leading the efforts to recover, repair, and rebuild in both Stebbins and St. Michael.
